Moderate disturbances and shrub protection enhance perennial grass recruitment in northern Patagonia

چکیده
Herbivory and fire promote changes in vegetation patches of arid environments, recruitment plays a key role their maintenance. We studied seedling dynamics seven sites with different land use histories related to grazing north-eastern Patagonian Monte, Argentina. selected shrub grazed/burned areas. On each patch, we established microsites along an under-canopy windward/leeward transect. Seedling perennial grasses (PGR) annual species (ASR) were registered on microsite. PGR was higher low-intensity disturbances, lower those severely disturbed or not disturbed. similar the leeward side, suggesting that shrubs generate for establishment side whatever surrounding disturbance. Severe disturbances promoted non-native ASR. overall low apparently, conditions enhanced ASR also decreased PGR. This situation leads replacement native-dominated community one dominated by AS. Our findings suggest cover heavily grazed this semiarid region are sustained mainly grass re-sprouting capacity, as is scarce. In contrast, have background and/or ungrazed show PGR, especially microsites. • Perennial recruited more moderately than highly/not ones. Differences only evident exposed predominant wind. Annuals lowest undisturbed maximum highly moderate burnt

Research Note Shrub Microsite Influences Post-Fire Perennial Grass Establishment
Woody plants can cause localized increases in resources (i.e., resource islands) that can persist after fire and create a heterogeneous environment for restoration. Others have found that subcanopies have increased soil organic matter, nitrogen, and carbon and elevated post-fire soil temperature. We tested the hypothesis that burned sagebrush subcanopies would have increased seedling establishm...

Woody plants can cause localized increases in resources (i.e., resource islands) that can persist after fire. We tested the hypothesis that burned sagebrush subcanopies would have increased seedling establishment and performance of post-fire seeded perennial bunchgrasses compared to burned interspaces. We utilized five study sites in southeastern Oregon. The area was burned in a wildfire (2007)...
متن کاملPopulation and clonal level responses of a perennial grass following Wre in the northern Chihuahuan Desert
Relationships involving Wre and perennial grasses are controversial in Chihuahuan Desert grasslands of southern New Mexico, USA. Research suggests that Wre delays the resprouting of perennial grasses well after two growing seasons. However, such results are confounded by livestock grazing, soil erosion, and drought. Additionally, post-Wre grass responses may depend on initial clone size. We eva...

متن کاملand transformation of high-biomass yielding perennial grass Arundo donax
In recent years there has been significant interest in harvesting renewable fuels and value-added chemicals from plant feedstocks, especially from perennial grasses such as Arundo donax L. [1, 2, 3]. Some reasons why perennial grasses are desirable as next-generation bioenergy feedstock are: (i) their low soil management requirements and growth on marginal land; (ii) their ability to prevent so...
